Right to Choose Adult Autism Assessments
Right to Choose is your legal right in England to pick an NHS-funded healthcare provider for your first specialist appointment.
You can now request a referral from your GP to a private Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment provider. These providers offer NHS services to an NHS standard.
“How do I request a referral under Right to Choose?”

“What happens next?”
A member of our team will be in touch to collect some information, such as your symptoms/reasons for requesting an ASD referral.
You will be required to complete a brief questionnaire known as the AQ10, which is an initial assessment to see whether you meet the criteria for an ASD referral.
You will be asked to choose an approved ASD assessment provider. These can be found on the ADHD UK website alongside the approximate wait times.
Upon receipt of all this information and confirmation that the requirements have been met, a referral will be sent by the GP and you will be notified.
If you do not meet criteria or we are unable to send a referral to your chosen provider, a member of our team will be in touch to inform you.
“Can anyone use Right to Choose?”
In order to use Right to Choose for an ASD assessment, you must be registered to a GP in England and meet the criteria in the AQ10 Questionnaire.
You cannot access services via Right to Choose if any of the following apply:
- Already receiving mental health care following an elective referral for the same condition; or
- Accessing urgent or emergency (that is, crisis) care; or
- Accessing services delivered through a primary care contract; or
- In high secure psychiatric services; or
- Detained under the Mental Health Act 1983; or detained in a secure setting. This includes people in or on temporary release from prisons, courts, secure children’s homes, certain secure training centres, immigration removal centres or young offender institutions; or
- Serving as a member of the armed forces (family members in England have the same rights as other residents of England).
