{"id":568,"date":"2026-02-06T16:25:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T16:25:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/surgerywebtemp.org.uk\/a83011\/?page_id=568"},"modified":"2026-02-06T16:25:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T16:25:45","slug":"the-easi-kidney-trial","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/surgerywebtemp.org.uk\/a83011\/the-easi-kidney-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"The Easi-Kidney Trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-block-key=\"1o81a\">EASi-KIDNEYTM\u00a0is a clinical trial testing whether the new medication called vicadrostat, also known as BI 690517,\u00a0taken in combination with a well-tested medication called empagliflozin, can be safely used to lower the risk of worsening kidney disease or heart disease in patients with kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"egi77\">In a previous large clinical trial called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gbr01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.empakidney.org%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cmichael.doughty%40nhs.net%7Cc7f7ead122984dcddd3c08de3e17ca67%7C37c354b285b047f5b22207b48d774ee3%7C0%7C0%7C639016469062228564%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=aBT8ZlR%2BeayopHVZ7eZuFDFbu0DDRc3btupotwq3XmE%3D&amp;reserved=0\"><b>EMPA-KIDNEYTM<\/b><\/a>, empagliflozin was shown to safely reduce the need for patients with chronic kidney disease to start dialysis, and it is now widely recommended to treat adults with chronic kidney disease worldwide.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"f7pq5\">Although empagliflozin substantially improves outcomes in people with kidney disease, it is not a cure and the health risks remain raised for many people. Vicadrostat (BI 690517)\u00a0is a newly developed medicine that could provide further health benefits to people with kidney disease.\u00a0Early studies have shown that\u00a0vicadrostat (BI 690517)\u00a0might protect the kidneys and heart but this needs to be tested in a large trial.<\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"b7fs9\">EASi-KIDNEYTM\u00a0aims to recruit about 11000 participants with kidney disease internationally. Half of the participants will take 10mg of\u00a0vicadrostat (BI 690517)\u00a0with 10mg of empagliflozin once a day and half will receive a matching inactive pill (placebo) with 10mg of empagliflozin once a day. Participants will be allocated to these two treatment groups randomly (like a toss of a coin) and no participant or researcher will know which patients are receiving\u00a0vicadrostat (BI 690517)\u00a0until the end of the trial.
